You construct a mass driver. You fix the staging. Once again.

Release clamps first, then fire the magnets

no worries, the orbit will buff out. just wait

<Eddi|zuHause>
is "mass driver" another name for "rail gun"?
<Althego>
it is an electomagnetic propulsion, but probably not areilgun
<Althego>
the railgun specifically is based on the lorentz force, but the mass driver is more like a linear motor
<darsie>
Mass driver can be different technologies.
<darsie>
Maybe even a light gas gun.
<darsie>
usually electric, though.
<darsie>
A mass driver or electromagnetic catapult is a proposed method of non-rocket spacelaunch which would use a linear motor to accelerate and catapult payloads up to high speeds.
<darsie>
Coilgun and maglev train could be used for landing, too, if the aproach is precise enough.
<Eddi|zuHause>
so a rail gun is a special kind of mass driver?
<darsie>
I'd say so.
<darsie>
Probably not very useful for space launch, because the projectile requires good electric contact with the rails and there's erosion.

oh, solar panels unrolling
<Mat2ch>
Are they hating?
<Althego>
haters gonna hate?
<Mat2ch>
I hate NASA livestream for using imperial units
<Mat2ch>
they could at least use both
<Mat2ch>
now I need to find an article explaining how those panels unroll. Are those tubes getting filled with some gas or is it the material itself trying to get in a lower state of energy?
<Althego>
i always assumed it was some gay
<Althego>
gas
<Althego>
lol
<packbart>
"The array does not need any motor to unfurl. This is achieved using the potential energy stored in the booms that is released as each boom transitions from a coil shape to a straight support arm" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roll_Out_Solar_Array
<packbart>
yeah, I wanted to know, too :)
<packbart>
I use those parts in KSP all the time (Near Future Solar mod)

so basically is it a spring?
<Eddi|zuHause>
so it's like spring tension?
<Mat2ch>
yes
<Mat2ch>
and yes
<Mat2ch>
or: The material wants to get into a lower stage of energy.

sigh.. when you come up with an in-game project to do, but then end up lost on how to even build the frame of the rover...>_<

I haven't got the time right now to play any game seriously :|

well... was referencing another game more than KSP.. I've done a few KSP rovers but they were more 'in sandbox' stuff ages back.
<JVFoxy>
I did do a truck once but then it was 'ok, how to get this off to another world without being stupid crazy with the rocket build?)
<JVFoxy>
probably be helpful to do a small robotic rover to scout out landing sites though. I'm constantly having problems finding anything flat enough to land on as is :(
<Mat2ch>
Between craters it's mostly flat
<JVFoxy>
so they say.. between, inside of.. I don't know. maybe I'm bad at picking places. I've ended up coming down on anything from 15-50 degree slops and not know it till i'm nearly down
<JVFoxy>
I guess its a trade off for being able to judge height without seeing shadows?

did anyone ever study the aerodynamic properties of a disco ball?

probably only slightly worse than sphere

since it has plenty edges to make votexs
