Due to recent major budget cuts, the KSC facility has been reduced to Gene's backyard, while his wife is not at the house. All the hot, sixties-looking girls defect to the Strong-Badian Administraion of Some Aluminum Foil to cheer on Space Captainface.

aw no money no hot girls I guess?

no, before they were all at Gene's house while his wife was out
<FLHerne>
but there's no space or privacy with KSC being based there

meh. I hate SEO, because it hides the useful information.

What was the maximum size of a ship that can be operated without a permanent crew?
<packbart>
like the descriptions of Youtube videos that only consist of "click here for dealz" links?
<Mat2ch>
I'm watching Cruising The Cut for some time now. Must be marvellous to have nature and water so close by all the time.
<Althego>
is that a boat on the boat?
<FLHerne>
the handling skills don't really carry over from one to the other
<Althego>
and a garden gnome
<FLHerne>
Mat2ch: oh, I might be on that next week :D
<FLHerne>
David was out with us on Atlas & Malus recently
<SporkWitch>
pedantic, but if it carries other boats, it's a ship (as a general rule)
<Mat2ch>
FLHerne: You are? Wow! I'm really looking forward to it!
<FLHerne>
Althego: yes
<Mat2ch>
I'm going to go kajaking in a few days
<FLHerne>
Althego: and a bicycle
<Mat2ch>
already preparing all the luggage. Haven't been camping in a while, stuff needs some testing.
<Mat2ch>
*kayaking
<Mat2ch>
FLHerne: My "plan", if you want to call it that way, was to live on a sailboat and use it to sail around, wherever I want to.
<FLHerne>
In what region?
<FLHerne>
it's possible and I know people who've done it
<FLHerne>
but a manageably-sized solo sailing boat *really* doesn't have a lot of living space
<Mat2ch>
First the baltic sea
<Mat2ch>
But first I've got to save money
<FLHerne>
my 31ft narrowboat has about 3x more usable volume than Dad's 33ft sailing boat, because it's a box
<FLHerne>
and not made entirely of sloping sides and pointy ends
<Mat2ch>
and maybe start off with a small boat that's capable for a few daytrips first
<FLHerne>
and frankly the usable volume of a 31ft narrowboat is a bit cramped to live in full-time
<Mat2ch>
yeah, I'd probably need a bit bigger boat than 10 m
<FLHerne>
also, visitors' mooring fees can be quite substantial at coastal marinas
<Mat2ch>
true, especially in the high season
<FLHerne>
sailing bigger than 10m will be hard work to crew single-handed, and cost even more in mooring fees
<Mat2ch>
The plan is not to moor ;)
<FLHerne>
that's sort of the 'standard' size for them IME, anything bigger and they assume you're rich
<Mat2ch>
Or tall and want the headroom in the boat...
<FLHerne>
then you'll have significant logistical problems
<FLHerne>
carrying everything you need in your life by tender and being cut off when the weather's bad isn't very fun long-term
<Mat2ch>
I'm having a worse time right now...
<FLHerne>
also in many areas there are no reasonably sheltered anchorages outside harbour limits
<FLHerne>
I don't know the Baltic though
<Mat2ch>
not going out, because it's >30° for days and backing in the top floor apartment...
<FLHerne>
you do get that on boats too
* FLHerne
looks at thermometer
<FLHerne>
29.4° apparently
<FLHerne>
it was about 32 yesterday
<FLHerne>
and you can air-condition a flat, whereas you can't practically air-condition a boat
<Mat2ch>
Waves never bothered me much
<FLHerne>
it's less a "bothered" and more "get anything done"
<Mat2ch>
also the Baltics doen't get that hot. Even on sunny days. And if it's sunny all day there's always wind due to the thermals

<FLHerne>
How much sailing experience do you have now?
<Mat2ch>
A few weeks on the water
<FLHerne>
my advice - as someone who considered pretty much that idea, decided it was impractical, and bought a narrowboat instead - is that it's not a practical idea
<Mat2ch>
Have been sailing on and off for over 20 years
<Mat2ch>
Would like to go more sailing, but the ocean is just not nearby
<FLHerne>
in that type of craft?
<FLHerne>
fair enough, that's more than the impression I was getting :p
<Mat2ch>
In smaller boats usually
<Mat2ch>
But I had my fair share of... uh, there's a thunderstorm coming and we should get somewhere safe soon...
<Mat2ch>
nothing makes you cling to a boat more than black clouds running in
<Mat2ch>
(we we did check the forecast, the storm was faster than expected)

Thirty hour challenge, only time for 6 hours break, going as far as possible without breaking the speed limit. This sounds quiet hard with all the locks.

The tunnel is almost 2 miles long

and Atlas towing Malus is not particularly fast

At least you were in no danger of breaking the speed limit :)
