"Take a photo of four tourists from the surface of Eve" - for some weird reason, they'd expect to return to Kerbin, too. I'm going to pass on that contract
<packbart>
oh, a new repair job contract. I'll try that one
<Althego>
haha
<darsie>
If they didn't return they'd be colonists, not tourists.
<Althego>
most of the delta v is burnt in the lover atmosphere. with electric props it should be possible to ascend to at least kerbin sea level pressure
<packbart>
I'm not ready yet for Eve ascents. I only just reached Eve orbit in this game, first time ever
<darsie>
packbart: Ever since you started playing KSP?
<packbart>
yes, indeed. My games usually didn't last that long for probes to reach other planets
<packbart>
it just takes too long
<Althego>
yes this is a huge problem
<Althego>
you can collect all the science from the mun and minmus
<darsie>
A 'relative newbie' on reddit asked for a hard challenge. I suggested an Eve water sample return mission. He picked a space station on Minmus someone else suggested :).
<darsie>
You get full science for each new lab you bring to Minmus.
<packbart>
not with Kerbalism
<darsie>
k
<packbart>
in Kerbalism, labs convert samples to transmissable (transmittable?) data
<packbart>
so you don't need to return that water sample, you could process it on Eve's surface
<packbart>
takes time and energy and scientists, though
<darsie>
IRL we can get more data out of samples on Earth.
<packbart>
only because we don't send staffed labs deep enough into space
<darsie>
Yeah. I guess if we sent staff to Mars, we could also bring most of our greatest instruments.
<darsie>
Or to Ryugu.
<darsie>
OTOH, we'd bring our staff back home, so we could just as well just fetch a sample.
<Althego>
the best equipment will always be on earth
<darsie>
In the 'near' term.
<Althego>
yes
<Althego>
which mean decades at least
<Althego>
so currently it is always better to bring back the sample
<darsie>
What analytical instruments are we lacking on the ISS?
<darsie>
To analyze samples.
<darsie>
Perhaps neutron activation. That could be done, too.
<darsie>
Maybe there's no x-ray fluorescence thing there.
<darsie>
spectroscope
Deddly has quit [Ping timeout: 189 seconds]
<packbart>
no large particle accelerators on the ISS
<darsie>
Are they useful in sample analysis?
<Althego>
small accelerators may be useful for some kinds
<packbart>
yeah, I guess "spectroscope" covers those
<darsie>
MS is a particle accelerator.
<darsie>
I assume they have GCMS.
<Althego>
there is some material research ongoing on the iss so they surely have some equipment
<Althego>
but they also return samples too
<darsie>
I guess there's no electron microscope.
<darsie>
Wouldn't need a vacuum pump there :).
<darsie>
high vacuum pump*
<darsie>
although, IIRC we can create better vacuum on Earth than there is in LEO.

hehe, it is funny that submarines have fresh food from scratch, bread, buns, pizza, etc, but spaceships have horrible foods
<Althego>
the problems are similar for both, have to feed people in a closed space with long term storage
<Althego>
but spaceships are more hightech
<Althego>
yet the food is worse
<nate>
submarine's have actual proper kitchens
<nate>
our spaceships and the ISS, not so much.
<nate>
lol
<Althego>
then it is about time there should be
<Althego>
i cant even imagine how to make a proper zero g kitchen
<nate>
Well yeah I imagine hot appliances in an oxygen rich environment, probably not the best of possibilities lol
<Althego>
iss is regular atmosphere
<raptop>
^
<darsie>
The RTG has 1200 K max, and will shutdown at 10,000 K. Typo?
<Althego>
but yes, still a problem
<Althego>
anyway out of all the submarine episodes of smarter every day, i liked the cooking part the best

In preparation to my comet expedition I took a trip with all available Kerbals to solar orbit so Bill would get a third star. It worked ... kinda. I forgot to pick up Bill from the orbital fuel station where I refuelled ...
<raptop>
oops
<raptop>
well, there's always the kerbals automatically levelup option
<darsie>
ok. I'll still load.

<darsie>
It didn't actually matter, cause I loaded/saved something wrong and didn't have the contract.
<darsie>
Confusing was that my dv predictions went wrong two ways. One was that I didn't have enough dv to return (I went fast to save time). I think it was due to Oberth effect.
Dazzyp has joined #KSPOfficial
<darsie>
The other was, that I had more dv than displayed because I had a fuel tank above a crossfeed enabled decoupler which KSP ignored when calculating dv. It was used first, so dv rose as it emptied. Then the lower tank was used. KER got it right.
