SporkWitch: In the tracking station you can select the body and look up the atmospheric density at AGL.
<darkie>
Then you could test on Kerbin with a barometer with active display at the altitude giving that pressure. I guess.
<darkie>
Won't work for Eve, ofc.
<SporkWitch>
so i got a lander design that can deorbit and safely land upright (used a couple girders to offset the parachutes to angle the force and not need a reaction wheel on the rover). Now I'm working on the staging for deploying commsats. I'm gonna deliver three commsats and the rover to Duna. Figure circularize first, separate the rover, then get into a polar orbit with a 1/3 resonance to deploy the
<SporkWitch>
sats :)
<SporkWitch>
the RA-15's are too big for the tri-coupler, though, so I'm having to put them in-line using the interstage nodes on the fairings, so staging is getting complicated lol
<darkie>
You might also use a few cubic struts as crushing dampers.
<SporkWitch>
might try that in future; 4 radial chutes got it under 5m/s so nice safe landing
<SporkWitch>
all the sats + rover are coming in at only 6 tonnes, this should be easy to position :)
<SporkWitch>
... when you spend 20 minutes tweaking your transfer stage only to realize you had the calculator set for sea level...
<Eddi|zuHause>
question... launch minimus mission now, or wait 1d for the mun mission to finish, and have the ability to revert back in case i miss something important?
<SporkWitch>
make extra saves?

Hmm, perhaps a bielliptic transfer?
<FLHerne>
;outcome add Unfortunately, KSP can't simulate the results.

the suggestion I was reading was for a mission to use the sun as a gravitational lens

but KSP has neither other planets nor gravitational lensing

the sun works as a gravitational lens for mercury
<Eddi|zuHause>
i think i won't be going to minimus today
<Eddi|zuHause>
tried to launch this thing like 5 times
<Eddi|zuHause>
with a PE of 56km, deorbiting debris takes a while...
<darkie>
That's very responsible of you.
<darkie>
You can also choose not to display it ;).
<Eddi|zuHause>
i could also hit the button to delete it
<Eddi|zuHause>
it fell apart from overheating... now i've got more debris :p

minimus encounter via mun flyby in 11 days
Tank2333 has joined #KSPOfficial
<Althego>
that is longer than average
<SporkWitch>
11 days to minmus seems reasonable, 11 days to the mun would be weird
<Althego>
i remember hohmann was about 5 days?
<Althego>
i usually try to keep it under 2
<bees>

<bees>
lets wait a month
<FLHerne>
wait 21 months
<bees>
and 200 years?
<Althego>
hehe
<raptop>
Reminder that February 2nd is cat day
<darkie>
I guess Mun flyby partially circularizes the orbit which might make it take longer.
<raptop>
well, apparently I misremembered and it's february 22
<Althego>
why is it cat day?
<darkie>
It's January in Austria.
<darkie>
ah, nm :)
<raptop>
althego: mostly it sounds like にゃ にゃ にゃ
<Althego>
ah
<raptop>
huh, also apparently there's a national cat day on march 1st in beesland
<Althego>
ok i will not make the same mistake as with mumei this morning, have to catch calli's unarchived karaoke tomorrow at 4 am...

does KER have a display for current G-forces? these tourists are so flimsy
* darkie
checks ...
<Eddi|zuHause>
just mentioning, i'm trying to reenter kerbin atmosphere from mun
<darkie>
Haven't found a display of acceleration due to atmospheric drag, yet.
<darkie>
Yes, found g-force.
<darkie>
Not in the standard windows by default, but can be added.
<darkie>
no g-force in a spinning rocket.
<darkie>
Even though gaps develop between parts.
<darkie>
also has a resettable max. G-force display.
<JVFoxy>
ah.. the center of mass thing
<JVFoxy>
I thought if you could put a meter on an arm and spin, it would give some reading. Nope.. only seems to be based on how much acceleration the center of mass goes through, not the actual part even if it; starts getting stretched out. :(
<JVFoxy>
speaking of flimsy, is that JR. Science can thing still very heat sensitive?
