My sincere apologies for your landlord

Must be a sorry sight watching this regularly

They filled the falcon heavy this morning.
<stratochief>
Probus: oh? stood her erect, pumped her with cryogens?
<stratochief>
Super cool. I wonder if it is poor insulation or high air humidity that causes so much vapour to form. Atlas V never seems anywhere near that vapoury
<Probus>
I was wondering the same thing. That is a pretty big cloud.
<stratochief>
I'm considering making a 2000s, expendables space program. something like, from Atlas V to Atlas V Heavy through to something like Ares V or SLS Block 2
<stratochief>
as usual, justifying and finding use for mid-steps proves challenging. but still, might be worth it.
<Probus>
Sounds like fun, especially if you set yourself some large goals.
<stratochief>
Yeah. I'll have to run some numbers to see if makes sense to actually use the Atlas V Heavy a decent number of times while developing something larger. Atlas V heavy could allow for some sizable EOR assembled payloads. I'm always a fan of EOR, since it has been entirely possible since the 70s
<stratochief>
Saturn V was great, but ultimately too large at the time to see continuous use. Still, I would've loved to see them set aside enough money to build another batch, and use them gradually over the following 10-15 years, to give the tech a chance for commercialization or re-use
<Probus>
Is it true they destroyed all the Saturn V documentation before building the space shuttle?
<Bornholio>
no but large piles were destroyed, (extra manuals that had dozens of copies)
<stratochief>
There is still tons of Saturn V documentation, yeah. The reason we can't re-build it is because the fabrication hardware wasn't preserved, plus the parts lists are out of date and call for things no longer manufactured by the private sector
<stratochief>
Which is why it would've been nice to have an extra few Saturn V build and used over the 70s, to early 80s. They could've kept developing small substitutions for computer and general components as they fell out of general manufacture.

<Starwaster>
anyone know if the recovery/rescue contracts can be modified or are they hard coded? I see an awful lot of stranded people in orbit before I even had my first manned orbital flight. That seems wrong
<ProjectThoth>
Starwaster: The failures of other nations are now your successes.
<Bornholio>
contract.cfg in squad
<Bornholio>
contracts.cfg
<Bornholio>
but really the contracts should be disabled and proper CC ones used
<Bornholio>
don't think you can set altitude ranges in stock, but eccentricty/inclination multipliers can be
<SRBuchanan>
Well, I've finally got my first custom part working properly.
<UmbralRaptor>
Starwaster: you've heard of lost cosmonauts, right?
<UmbralRaptor>
>_>
<Bornholio>
lSRB you have a link to a git or some such?
<SRBuchanan>
Nope, still in super-super beta.
<SRBuchanan>
I only started that last night and wrapped it up less than an hour ago.
<SRBuchanan>
Once I work out how to configure it for RO I'll make a few more and then release the pack. The goal is a full set of real and real-looking RCS thrusters.
<SRBuchanan>
There's a shortage of those in RO right now.
<Starwaster>
umbralraptor I've heard of them yes. I've also heard some of it is hoaxes
<Bornholio>
there are a couple mods for RCS out there but i've not checked to see if any Rcs thruster values are availabe
<SRBuchanan>
I also want to make them switchable between NTO and MON3, since most thrusters can use either.
<SRBuchanan>
Specifically the R4-D. That's flagged as an NTO engine even though it's now used on vehicles that use MON3.
<Bornholio>
why not just use a standard RCS thruster config or copy it and just bumpe the ISP for the longer nozzles
<SRBuchanan>
That's a possibility, yeah.
<UmbralRaptor>
Starwaster: I wasn't being especially serious.
<Starwaster>
why not? Is there a reason we can't have a serious discussion about whether or not space is haunted by the screaming phantoms of dead cosmonauts?
<Bornholio>
because i'll start adding the words "in my pants" to the end of all that
<Starwaster>
you have screaming cosmonauts in your pants?

Incidentally, does this mean that you can hear a dog barking outside your capsule?
<SRBuchanan>
Long term I'd like an SSTU-style ability to 'cluster' the engines into thruster packs of various sorts as well but I'm sure that's a huge headache.
<ProjectThoth>
SRBuchanan: I just want modular solid motors in stock. :/
