Lithobrake has some large landing legs, don't know about RO configs though
<Shimmy>
i'll take a look, thanks
<Shimmy>
it adds some heavier landing legs, but nothing with extra style, and of course, no RO configs yet.
<Oro>
Hey all - is there a way to tell CKAN "Actually bro, this mod IS installed. I put it in manually."
<Oro>
I basically have an install I'm crafting where I can't add any parts packs because they all want CRP, a mod I already have installed.
Majiir is now known as Snoozee
<xShadowx>
Oro: ckan detects mods on startup, and marks them with AD
<xShadowx>
if ckan is failing, remove CRP and let ckan add CRP
<xShadowx>
else install mods manual
<Oro>
okie dokie, xShadowx :)
<Oro>
Doesn't matter anyway, I need to scrap that install. Either there was a memory leak, or the mods were just too high in memory - blasted up to 12gb of ram usage about 10 seconds after launch and froze.
<Oro>
I find trying to make an install without a clear plan / goals often leads to unnecessary bloating.
<Oro>
oh, quick question part two:
<Oro>
DirectX or OpenGL for performance
<pap1723>
For performance, it was always OpenGL, uses less memory
<Oro>
Pap1723: I know that, but does it affect framerates and such in a negative way?
ale260382 has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<stratochief|vacation>
Oro: of course
<Oro>
stratochief|vacation: so what's the best blend of framerate and memory?
<Oro>
oh great car-man :)
<stratochief|vacation>
entirely depends on your memory and hardward sitch, and how much you value a high framerate vs higher res assets
<stratochief|vacation>
which RSS texture set are/were you using? were you using RSSVE or something that adds clouds?
<Oro>
I mostly value a high "% time"
<Oro>
and yea, I was using RSSVE
<stratochief|vacation>
try using the 2k or 4k texture set, that should let you see how much memory you'll save there. also, consider running w/o RSSVE, or the portion of RSSVE that adds clouds
<stratochief|vacation>
heck, I don't recall if I've added clouds to my 1.2.2 install yet, since I was enjoying the performance impovement
<Oro>
honestly strato this isn't that big of a deal, my fatal error was trying to make a "with all the fixin's" install :P
<Oro>
I have a pair of fun, stable installs as well
<Oro>
one in 1.05 & one in 1.1.3
<stratochief|vacation>
I haven't used DX11 or OpenGL modes since we got x64 back, but I've got 16GB of mem
<Oro>
stratochief|vacation: I hav 16gb as well, but this borked it in 10 secondds flat
<stratochief|vacation>
I've definitely been guilty of trying to stay near the 'all the fixins' line as well. add a higher res planet or two here, add or remove cloud layers there :P
<Oro>
yeah, honestly I use min res texture for all planets 'cept Mars, Earth, and Luna
<Oro>
And Mars gets a half res normal map, and so does the moon
<Oro>
but all three get full 8k textures
<stratochief|vacation>
for me, cloud layers eat my framerate, %time like nothing else. I generally go with just 1 layer, delete all other textures for other clouds
<Oro>
yeah, I agree on the cloud thing. Very damaging to timescale. Same with engine light, though to a much less degree
<stratochief|vacation>
can you mix different res texture & normal maps? i've never tried
<Oro>
yep yep, very stable
<Oro>
honestly, my main MIGHTY NEED is a good skybox
<Oro>
I find that a great skybox, planetshine, and Distant Object makes me a happy snake chasing it's own tail
<stratochief|vacation>
lol. well, easiest way to find the right skybox would be to make a stripped down install of KSP, minimize boot time, then try em all
<Oro>
(Ouroboros - Ouro confuses people, so I'm Oro)
<Oro>
actuaally I think I have the right one
<Oro>
it's super high res, with tiny dot stars. Very nice looking.
<stratochief|vacation>
any measurement of how much memory that eats? I've never experimented with great skyboxes, but I could see one eating memory and possibly performance
<Oro>
Nah, trust me, I know the source of my issues
<Oro>
it's not a big eat
<Oro>
maybe 100mb at most
<Oro>
Okay everybody, wish me luck! Last boot of the night, my install is (hopefully) complete
<Oro>
if it works, I can use my day off tomorrow to do some great rockety things :P
<Oro>
the primary thing that excites me is the addition of the welding tool
<stratochief|vacation>
KAS/KIS?
<Oro>
No, I'm using the Ubio Zur welding tool as well as kis & kas
<Oro>
I wanted to see if I could make bigger, greeble-er stations and service modules with less fear of the framerate dying

which is what annoys me when people demand in the comments of my youtube series how to reproduce my install.

So apparently, with RealHeat, it's impossible to land stuff with only a heatshield, because the heat gets conducted behind it and fries everything attached to the heatshield

Probably "only" recompiling, I'd guess. But good luck with that. It apparently needs a quite exotic environment.
<rsparkyc>
and is that just running make?
<rsparkyc>
there's a vagrant file, but it can't find the image to download

Well, first the install_dependencies.sh, and then make, yes.

But it probably won't compile.

prob, but i'll try :)
