Space history for April 16: A modified Soyuz variant intended for lunar flybys is approved by the Russian government in 1962. The Saturn V's massive S-IC stage is test fired for the first time in 1965. The ill-fated Soyuz 1 spacecraft is moved to the integration hall in 1967. so, I want a forum thread where I can stash useful documents for planning interplanetary resources in KSP-RSS, which KSP sub-forum should that go under?
<stratochief>
sadly, at first I intend to stash boring things like actually used parachute sizes, ballistic co-efficients, etc. there
<stratochief>
also, I wonder if RO could use tweakables/upgrades to create the higher rating of heatshields we want/need for Mars and Venus missions

Using a forum thread as document stash sounds as good an idea as launching an equatorial rocket from the north pole

plus, an RO subforum woud just quickly devolve into people asking for help without reading previous help, like everything RSS/RO/RP-0 related on forums or reddit tends to do

Blowfish
<blowfish>
hi
<JeeF>
Good afternoon ;)
<JeeF>
Tested the ramjet
<blowfish>
cool. Any observations. I don't think the model is perfect yet, but it's an improvement I would say
<JeeF>
it's much better. After it gets going, it gets going. I wasn't able to reach decent speeds to really get it going with a pair of SU27 engines on afterburner mode and 2 ramjets trying to help push it. Aircraft sculpted as slipstream as possible. Got stuck at mach 2.9, but I could definitely see the ramjet increasing in thrust. Then I replaced the SU27 jets with J58s and voilá. Mach 6
<JeeF>
And everything blew to bits, as expected =P
<JeeF>
Now if I had to say something that might need tuning is the thrust it gives at speeds of mach 2-3
<JeeF>
could use about 10-15% bump
<JeeF>
After mach 3 it flies, but just below mach 3 it's kinda dead
<JeeF>
After mach 3.2-ish, the ramjet has enough thrust to push the aircraft to go faster, hence giving itself more intake air and going even faster. But just below mach 3, has no push at all on it's own and it starts losing speed
<JeeF>
Now, I don't know if this is intended...
<JeeF>
It has always been my understanding that the thrust is gradual, smoother thurst curve, from mach 0.5 to mach 3
<JeeF>
atm doesn't feel that smooth
<blowfish>
I don't think there's actually much I can do to tune thrust at specific speeds
<JeeF>
hmm
<stratochief>
JeeF: you might just need a bit more conventional thrust to get it over that bump?
<JeeF>
But that's the thing, strato
<blowfish>
performance is based on a simulation
<JeeF>
If you don't have a J58 capable of tossing you over the mach 3 line, the ramjets won't have enough push to continue on their own. Jet engines capable of mach 2 should be able to give enough push for the ramjets to take it from there and continue
<JeeF>
Feels like there's too much of a gap
<JeeF>
I'm flying at around 10km high, not a lot of drag there at mach 2
<JeeF>
ramjets should be able to push
<blowfish>
should they? Ramjet powered missiles are typically boosted up to cruise speed by a solid rocket and then just maintain their speed I think
Shimmy has joined #RO
<JeeF>
Well I'm gonna have to do more research on it
<JeeF>
but it just doesn't feel right
<stratochief>
JeeF: 'right' being defined from experience with non-ramjets, though.
<JeeF>
Comparing the power it gives you at mach 3.5 to the power it gives you at mach 2.8, it's just too much of a gap, doesn't feel gradual.
<blowfish>
yeah, if you find any real data to compare against, I'm definitely willing to take a look
<blowfish>
JeeF: how much were you regulating dynamic pressure? Could be you were climbing too steeply in that range
<stratochief>
yeah, my understanding (and review of the wiki) suggests that mach 2-3 is where the thrust actually starts to pick up, with 3.0 or 3.change where they can compete with and beat non-ramjets
<blowfish>
or not steeply enough
<JeeF>
ZERO climb
<JeeF>
as flat as it goes
<stratochief>
blowfish: interesting point. what about a dive to get a boost in non-ramjet speed, so you can nose over Mach 3.1 and get some ram going?
<blowfish>
there's certainly nothing in the model that would cause a jump in that range
<JeeF>
Dives won't work, the ramjets can't overpower the slow increase in drag as you dive
<JeeF>
they are reeeally weak below 3.5
<stratochief>
blowfish: where on Github can I see the model? I'm curious
<stratochief>
basically, look at the RealPlume config for whatever part you're using, change to use a different pre-fab that is more blue or to your liking
<stratochief>
blowfish: thankee
<JeeF>
Haven't modded in years, never tackled anything on KSP other than a few settings on cfg files, would take me a long time to learn all the tricks. I could give it a shot but real life is not giving me more than an hour every couple of days to mess about with ksp
<JeeF>
But yeah we should all contribute, you're right
<JeeF>
I'll take a look
<stratochief>
JeeF: in this case, finding the config for the engine you're interested in, looking at the MM cfg code for it should be pretty simple. you'll see a prefab name, and you can change it to match with 5-15 minutes of learning I figure
<stratochief>
but yeah, naturally when time allows. even carving out 15 minutes to learn or do things can be a challenge at times
<stratochief>
because tools and tutorials/explainations are useful for making contributing easier
<JeeF>
OMFG YOU CAN TUNE IN GAME ON THE FLY???
<JeeF>
I'm in! =)
<stratochief>
tuning in game is easy, the trick is using what you learn in game to back those changes into configs
<JeeF>
But suppose I find a value that looks correct, does it save
<JeeF>
yeah I was about to ask that
<stratochief>
nope, you gotta take that change and modify the RO RealPlume config file
<JeeF>
So I have to write down the values I'm pleased with and put them into the config files
<JeeF>
Shouldn't be too hard
<stratochief>
yep. I've thrown away oodles of scrap paper with the numbers I've found and implemented :)
<stratochief>
as always, I suggest starting small. some numbers are easier to modify into the config than others
<JeeF>
I've a background of coding so I know the logic of the cfg files. I just don't know what certain entries mean exactly, and having to fire the game (10 minute loading time) for each change to see what it does is too much of a pain. But being able to do in game in real time? Ha, all problems solved
<blowfish>
you can reload the database without restarting the game
<blowfish>
Alt+F11 in the space center
<blowfish>
you probably want quick reload, no need to re-render drag cubes
<blowfish>
but yeah, trying to mod on a full RO setup is painful at best. Now you probably see why I'm doing this stuff on a pretty minimal install
<JeeF>
Definitely
<JeeF>
Has anybody managed to figure out a way to simulate heated air visual disturbances?
<JeeF>

sadly he vanished and i dont think handed any of it over to peeps to continue it x.x
<JeeF>
Yes shadow, that's exactly what I meant. And damn him to hell for leaving that beautiful work unfinished GRRRRRR
<JeeF>
I was just in the shower and had a mod idea. I'm constantly having to manually change the max angle of attack of my control surface bits depending on speed. For low speeds and high maneuverability, increasing it to around 30 degrees, and for when I'm hypersonic, as low as 2 degrees. Is there a mod that does that automatically for you?
<JeeF>
and is it even doable?
