<Probus> Is there a way to make a "Sandbox" game with funds?
<waerloga> so the inverse science mode?
<waerloga> easiest way I think is to just unlock all the science stuff either by that mod (tree toppler? if it still works
<waerloga> or cheat in all the science you need
<xShadowx> MM cfg set all parts' techs to starter tech :P
<stratochief|vacation> well, this is like the first time I've seen the Germans successfully invade France in HOI4. not sure if luck, or if they eventually improved AI through patches
<stratochief|vacation> although the French didn't defend the Maginot line, which is also an AI failure
<waerloga> still not gotten the hang of hoi4 very much
<waerloga> and the AI just destroys me in stellaris
<stratochief|vacation> yeah, AI was too good for me in Stellaris as well, and I believe I've gone faceblind to Space 4X games, they all look and play the same to me
<waerloga> trying out nuka world in FO4 at the moment
<waerloga> as far as paradox games, I do much better in EU4
<stratochief|vacation> I don't know enough old-timey history to play EU well, or enjoy it
<stratochief|vacation> WW1 and WW2, I at least know
<waerloga> I've heard good things about vic2, so I'm hoping a vic3 comes out
<stratochief|vacation> yeah, Vic is recent enough that I know some of the history, and I'd be willing to learn more for a new Vic game
<Rokker> stratochief|vacation: but you learn from it
<waerloga> yeah, I've learned a lot about that period in history by playing EU4
<waerloga> ...and then reading further up on it
<Rokker> waerloga: from all the stuff ive heard, not much of a chance it will come out any time soon
<waerloga> yeah, well they are still doing CK2, EU4, HOI4, and Stellaris work
<waerloga> I figure VIC3 will be a long time coming
<stratochief|vacation> Rokker: that era of history is... too much like game of thrones for me to keep track. I don't learn it fast enough for it to be worthwhile to me
<Rokker> i mean they are still releasing DLC for Crusader Kings 2, ffs
<Rokker> they dont have time to work on a new vic
<waerloga> stratochief|vacation: you want game of thrones, play CK2 :P
<stratochief|vacation> yeah, I've seen a little bit of CK2. even more so GOT
<Rokker> pretty sure thats a mod
<waerloga> and yeah, there's a GT mod for CK2

<TheKosmonaut> stratochief|vacation: hey you
<stratochief|vacation> o/
<TheKosmonaut> I'm trying to understand why SpaceX tanks are so big.
<stratochief|vacation> big in what way?
<TheKosmonaut> The Falcon 1e is like 26m or there about long
<TheKosmonaut> But only burns for something like 168s
<TheKosmonaut> So in KSP I have to turn tank utilization down to like 25%
<TheKosmonaut> It just seems weird and I guess it's KSP's fault but that just struck me as odd
<TheKosmonaut> The first stage*
<stratochief|vacation> does your Falcon 1e appear consistent with the bnumz data for it?
<stratochief|vacation> bnumz says a burn time for the Ie as 244.5 seconds, 443 kN SL thrust, 39.5 tonnes fuel
<TheKosmonaut> Er. Yeah not 160s
<TheKosmonaut> It is much longer than that.
<TheKosmonaut> I meant that my numbers are consistent with data extrapolated from SpaceX sources in the past.
<TheKosmonaut> Mass is mostly right too.
<TheKosmonaut> I pulled my numbers from this site.
<TheKosmonaut> It has some very precise measurements. Which is a godsend as always.
<stratochief|vacation> well, I definitely recommend giving those bnumz pages a look. it says a Merlin-1Ci burned for 158.5 seconds (Falcon I), while the Merlin-1C for Falcon Ie burnes for 244.5 seconds
<TheKosmonaut> But this is a consistent thing with KSP Ptanks.
<stratochief|vacation> yeah, I wouldn't trust any single source much, particularly when it disagrees with what you're finding
<TheKosmonaut> stratochief|vacation: yeah I got my numbers backwards, I went from a Falcon 1 (original) and decided to go to Falcon 1E
<TheKosmonaut> Nah, the masses and length and everything else is accurate so far, but pTanks utilization slider needs to be pulled way down to make the fuel load make sense mass and burn time wise.
<stratochief|vacation> well, try building to Bnumz standards, and report back :)
<TheKosmonaut> I'll look at those too
<TheKosmonaut> Generally though, it seems like SpaceX tanks give me a hard time because they use some different materials
<TheKosmonaut> The upper stage of the Falcon 1 is too heavy in KSP if I make it by the same dimensions so I need to sort of game the system a bit
<stratochief|vacation> even if you make it 'balloon', or one of the lighter tank types
<TheKosmonaut> Yeah, well the Kestrel is pressure fed and so it makes things a little difficult. But I worked around it already.
<TheKosmonaut> Now the upper stage has <5 kg deviance from the real thing

<pap1723> Hello All
<pap1723> I am working on determining the correct amount of TACLS to include in a Command Module. Is there an easy equation / spreadsheet to determine the amounts needed in the tanks for the proper mission duration?
<waerloga> there might be, but inside the VAB there's a tool that'll tell you
<waerloga> or...there was anyway
<pap1723> I wasn't very clear, sorry...I mean I am working on CFG files for RO
<waerloga> ah
Iskra has joined #RO
<waerloga> I'd look at the config files that RO has for TACLS, should give you a consumption rate that you could use to figure out how much to put in
Iskierka has quit [Ping timeout: 180 seconds]
Iskra is now known as Iskierka
<stratochief> Pap1723: as waerloga says, yeah. if you want to configure a gemini or apollo, you can pretty much copy the TACLS things from an existing RO config for that. if you're making something else, my answer would depend on what thing you're trying to configure
<waerloga> I mean I'd start with the mk1 capsule iirc that's designed to give 1 person 3 days of consumables
<stratochief> yeah, Mk1 is a Mercury analog
<pap1723> Based on the rates I have figured out, the Mk1 only gives food for 48 hours
<pap1723> I think I have figured out the ratios and how it is calculated
<pap1723> Essentially, TACLS looks at how much is consumed or produced each second
<stratochief> but lets look at the complexity of real things as you add people and time. Apollo doesn't just send a ton of batteries and water, it uses a fuel cell for power and water production. similarly, Skylab or ISS partially recycle some waste, like air/co2 or water
<stratochief> TACLS will allow a person to survive for a while after they run out of air or water, so 2 days of rations aren't unreasonable for Mk1/Mercury. IIRC, 48-72 hours was the longest mission for Mercury
<pap1723> So in order to determine how much to put in the pod, you have to multiply the numbers of kerbals by the number of seconds of the mission length
<pap1723> Yep, ok, i think i understand it now
<stratochief> also, they probably didn't feed them much, since they didn't have any system for human waste beyond diapers there :P
<stratochief> Pap1723: yeah, that is essentially what I start from. I've made my own TACLS spreadsheet a few times using the consumption per second rate to forecast resource demands and setup configs
<pap1723> Thanks for talking through it with me @stratochief
<stratochief> Pap1723: ah! I finally found the original TACLS google sheet, here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1DkWf210viRSNcV8tvDv30vZ_iACj6GeY1Lf_4JdZYds/edit#gid=0
