part unlock costs to be specific
<Rokker>
soundnfury: hold on
<Rokker>
soundnfury: 41000 funds for the B-52 cockput
<Rokker>
cockpit
<Rokker>
soundnfury: pretty expensive for a plane churned out in a few days in a Dayton hotel room
<Rokker>
soundnfury: 56-57 orbital rocketry is gonna cost me 700k to unlock

<soundnfury>
Rokker: so, I can well believe that plane cockpits in general haven't been balanced. But check the cfg, it might be sourced (I have a vague recollection that they basically worked backwards from the total B-52 program cost somehow)
<soundnfury>
as for 56-57 orbital rocketry, you probably don't want/need to buy _all_ the things in it
<soundnfury>
and also there are entrycostmodifiers
<soundnfury>
(when you unlock e.g. the LR105, the cost of the LR101 and LR79/89 should go down)
<Rokker>
soundnfury: I mean I wasn't gonna buy the commie engines anyways, but still
<Rokker>
like I don't see how I can keep up with those costs
<Rokker>
unless I minmax to hell
<soundnfury>
I mean, you're _supposed_ to minmax a _bit_...
<soundnfury>
but yeah, entrycostmods'll do ya
UmbralRaptop has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<Rokker>
soundnfury: I'm about to invest 14k into what might be my first orbital rocket
<soundnfury>
the Atlas/Thor engines all share a 130,000-fund ECM (Navaho-TP) so once you've unlocked one the others should be pittances
<Rokker>
I'm scared cause it's such a small margin for error
<soundnfury>
14k is a pretty small amount in RP-1. That's like a couple of big sounding rocket contracts, no?
<Rokker>
soundnfury: wait... I don't have a Navajo engine
<soundnfury>
... although if that's your build cost rather than rollout cost, then that is far too expensive, you can build an Atlas-Centaur for less than that
<soundnfury>
Navaho isn't the name of a part, it's an ECM defined in the cfgs
<Rokker>
ohhhh
<Rokker>
soundnfury: build cost
<Rokker>
soundnfury: Redstone and aj10
<soundnfury>
(see GameData/RP-0/Tree/EntryCostModifiers.cfg and friends)
<soundnfury>
do you have untooled tanks?
<soundnfury>
Redstone/Able should not be costing 14k.
<Rokker>
yes, I assumed tooling was for mass production rockets
<Rokker>
I was thrown into RP-1 headfirst. I'm still learning to swim
<Rokker>
also, AJ10-37, not able
<soundnfury>
I kinda use "Able" interchangeably with "AJ10 (Early)".
<soundnfury>
Basically anything you're gonna want to launch more than one of is probably worth tooling
<soundnfury>
and given TF failures are a thing, you're probably gonna want a backup of this rocket
egg|nomz|egg is now known as egg
<soundnfury>
tbh I find it's very rare for non-tooled parts to be the right choice
<Rokker>
soundnfury: 11k funds to tool a tank?
<Rokker>
idk
<Rokker>
seems high for a 1 and done, even a 3 and done
<soundnfury>
but then I do plan pretty aggressively to optimise tooling reuse
<Rokker>
how much will it reduce my costs
<soundnfury>
given that it also affects rollout cost, I think the average tooling pays for itself after about three-ish launches
<soundnfury>
and don't forget that adding more toolings of the same diameter but different length is much cheaper
<Rokker>
I don't expect to use 1.75 diameter too much
<soundnfury>
My experience is that (if I go the Redstone route at all) I end up launching at least half a dozen Redstones before replacing them
<soundnfury>
(not just for orbital shots; they're also heavy sounding rockets for various tasks)
<Rokker>
soundnfury: eh. ima build up some money for now I guess anyways
<Rokker>
even tho it is 56
<soundnfury>
but to give you some idea, a Redstone with AJ10-27-based upper fully tooled in one of my RP-1 playthroughs was around about 1k funds to build, 2 or 3 to roll out
VanDisaster has quit [Ping timeout: 198 seconds]
<Rokker>
soundnfury: but how
<Rokker>
i feel like the engines alone would cost more
<schnobs>
Rokker: tooled tanks are frightfully cheap. Like, a pittance.
VanDisaster has joined #RO
<Rokker>
schnobs: oh. pittance has already been said within the last hour
<Rokker>
modern English demand an hour period between saying that word
<schnobs>
"pfffrrrrt" not being proper english, i looked for the next best word that came to mind.
<schnobs>
That said: if you plan on reusing tooled parts, you need a good oracle / prior knowledge.
<soundnfury>
schnobs: you could try "a bent sou" instead. Or, translating into American for Rokker's benefit, "a wooden nickel".
<soundnfury>
Rokker: don't forget that tooling _upper_ stage tanks also makes a difference
<schnobs>
I found it pretty hard to make good-enough guesses about the size of tank that woudl still suit me with the next engine model.
<soundnfury>
and while the Redstone is tankbutty enough to tie you to a diameter, upper stages have a lot more freedom
<soundnfury>
(assuming you're using proc avionics. You _are_ using proc avionics, right?)
<soundnfury>
oh and tool your fairing bases / fairings / interstages too
<soundnfury>
(basically, check the Tooling tab of the £ (not #) menu)
<schnobs>
Do you have a "tool it all" button yet?
<schnobs>
(Lost the link to awang's dropbox, but could share my copy)
<Rokker>
im not using proc avionics yet, should i be
<soundnfury>
Rokker: well, they're more flexible than the non-proc ones
<schnobs>
Rokker: ^
<Rokker>
well, i dont need felxibility just yet
<soundnfury>
you get to pick your stage diameter, instead of "oh you're using Able, here have a 0.814m stage
<schnobs>
That's very important.
<soundnfury>
which then means that you can use the _same_ diameter for your next generation stage
<schnobs>
As soon as you get satellite contracts demanding X payload, the 814mm become rather tight.
<soundnfury>
and like I say, re-using diameters is the key to a happy accountant
