<Althego>
starship is progressing nicely, and no doubt it would be able to land on the moon in a few years
<Althego>
but what about mars? how would it transport so many people? what about weightlessness?
<XXCoder>
I think everyone would need to do daily exercises
<XXCoder>
in least a hour a day
<XXCoder>
expecially isomorphic one where person is pushed towards surface and person must stay standing
<Althego>
that doesnt completely stop every negative effect. also look at how hard time astronauts have after returning to earth from the iss. they wouldnt be able to handle even martian gravity
<XXCoder>
yeah. maybe centifungual? similiar effect as gravity
<Althego>
and you cant do the zubrin style detached engine rotation
<Althego>
the ship is too small for this to work well
<Althego>
of course spacex wouldnt start to build the ship without thinking this through, they just havent told us yet :)
<XXCoder>
you can do it pretty cheaply by using cables
<XXCoder>
of course both ends is unable to visit each other, but can do say weekly meetups to deal with stuff while low gravity
<Althego>
say you want 1g. that would mean the cable needs to support the weight of the whole ship, and the ship needs to support its own weight while hanging instead of standing on legs
<XXCoder>
if I was designing it, maybe would go for say 1 km diameter
<XXCoder>
meaning 500m cables each end
<XXCoder>
longer if possible.
<XXCoder>
very doable. its not like im building bridge to space.
<XXCoder>
and most of ship wouldnt be tethered
<XXCoder>
it would be centeral axis
<XXCoder>
its just living modules that spin at ends
<XXCoder>
its perfect for small crew, like 10 to 20
<Althego>
what we currently know of the design, the living quarters are inside the ship
<XXCoder>
yeah rest of ship would be also living envorment
<Althego>
it is able to dock, so you could dock something in space
<XXCoder>
though smaller number of crew thats current on "crew shift"
<XXCoder>
while modules is on "remote work" or just gravity days
<XXCoder>
ideally 2/3 of time is spent in gravity
<XXCoder>
reeling in and out probably have to be designed extremely robost
<XXCoder>
robust
<XXCoder>
with backups and all
<XXCoder>
and its probably not to 1g, more like .5g or something enough to help body keep muscles
